Those who have been crowned World Champion while racing for McLaren all share a certain tenacity, and their journeys to the top have rarely been smooth. Whether it’s fierce rivalries or troubling reliability issues, they’ve had their fair share of hurdles to overcome en route to the history books.

An overhaul of leadership and the driver line-up doesn’t always work out, but fortunately for Kick Sauber, they seemed to thrive off the back of the shake-up going into 2025. Their spot in the Teams' Championship standings might not entirely reflect what Team Principal Jonathan Wheatley called their “extraordinary” achievements, with Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto both experiencing incredible highs to wave a perfect farewell to the Sauber name. Pierre Gasly headed into 2025 looking to build on an encouraging end to the previous F1 season, having scored points in four of the final five rounds and made another appearance on the podium. It proved to be a particularly challenging year for his Alpine team, though, who struggled for performance early on and promptly shifted development resources to their 2026 challenger, leaving them at the foot of the Teams’ Championship.
